Invasion Women Continue Roll Against Sunrise

Bel Aire, KS -
One week after hosting Sunrise Christian Academy, the Invasion softball team went back on the road and met the Buffaloes on their home field.

Game One

Any thoughts of an easy win after sweeping a doubleheader with Sunrise were quickly erased as Sunrise took a 2-1 lead after one inning and held the Invasion women scoreless in the second.   After Invasion scored 2 runs in the 3rd to go ahead 3-2 on runs scored by Morgan Dester and Laurel Palmer, Sunrise tied the game with a run in the bottom of the inning and could have had more but for three consecutive strikeouts by Elizabeth Macias.

The fourth inning started off a little rough for Invasion as they were caught batting out of order.   So with two outs, the Derby women did what all good teams do – they dug in and with two outs hit well and ran the bases aggressively.    Hits by Renae Bergen, Katie St. John, and Elizabeth Macias coupled with walks to Kay Denton, Abby Shinkle, Kerrie Barger, and Jewels Wampler resulted in a six run inning and a 9-3 lead that the Invasion would not relinquish.

Elizabeth finished with 13 strikeouts in the five inning game, striking out the side in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th innings.   Strong defensive plays were turned in by Abby at second base and Renae at shortstop.

Game Two

In game two of the doubleheader Sunrise was determined to prevent a sweep by the visiting Invasion.   The Invasion women stepped up their aggressive base running with Morgan getting thrown out at the plate in the first inning that required a perfect throw to get her.

The Invasion defense behind the pitching of Elizabeth held Sunrise scoreless through the first three frames.   The Invasion didn’t fair much better as they were unable to get another runner to third base until the 3rd inning when after a walk to Jewels, Morgan singled, and Elizabeth doubled, Jewels scored the first run of the game.

In the top of the fourth Abby ripped the ball into center field for the first triple in Derby Invasion Softball history scoring on a double by Renae for a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the inning.   The Sunrise bats came alive in their half of the fourth as they managed two singles, a double, a triple, and two home runs resulting in 3 runs and a 3-2 lead going into the fifth.

The late game heroics continued for Derby as Morgan led off the inning with a walk followed by hits by Elizabeth, Abby and Kerrie Barger resulting in a five run 5th inning and a 7-3 lead. After Sunrise hit the ball so well in the 4th inning there was plenty of concern among the Derby faithful as their team took the field to protect the four run lead.   The fans had little time to worry as the Invasion defense put Sunrise down 1-2-3 for their fourth win in a row and an overall 4-2 record.
