Invasion Women Sweep Doubleheader vs. Sunrise

High Park , Derby, KS vs Sunrise -

After traveling 3 hours each way to Osawatomie for their first games the Invasion Softball team was happy to have a home game at High Park in Derby.   Facing the visiting Sunrise Christian Academy Buffaloes (Buffalettes?) provided the team an opportunity to show their skills to the hometown crowd.

After shutting down Sunrise in the first inning, the Derby women kept the score keeper busy scoring 3 runs in the first and 6 in the second.   In the second inning Abby Shinkle crushed a line drive to right center for the first double in team history driving in Melody Bloyer who had singled.

The Invasion bats were quiet in the third and fourth innings, but with a strong defensive effort and good pitching from Elizabeth Macias, the team cruised to a 9-1 win in the first game of the double header.   Elizabeth rang up 9 strikeouts in the five inning game.

In game two the Invasion took a 7-1 lead into the fifth inning after scoring 4 in the second, 1 in the third, and 2 in the fourth.   Strong defensive play from Laurel Palmer and Kay Denton along with another fine pitching performance from Elizabeth positioned the Invasion for their second straight win.

Sunrise had other ideas… After getting one out in the fifth, the next six Sunrise batters reached base.   With one out, the score 7-5 and runners on second and third, Elizabeth was able to notch her fourth strikeout of the game just when the team needed it.   The game ended when Melody Bloyer through out the runner at first.   Good defensive plays were turned in by Renae Bergen and Abby Shinkle.

The Invasion women take their 2-2 record out to Bel Aire, KS next Monday to play Sunrise again in a double header starting at 4:00PM.
