Invasion Juniors help out on Senior day in win over Mavs
Juniors Sean Michaelson and Josh May helped the Derby Varsity Men overcome a slow start to defeat the KC Metro Mavs 51-41 Saturday January 31st at Calvary Baptist Church. And while Michaelson led the way with 26 points and May added 11 points and 6 boards, all 4 Invasion seniors played important roles as they helped Derby to its 14th consecutive victory (16-2 overall).
In a game that started slowly and developed into a defensive struggle, coach Brian Swallow was able to count on great senior leadership at guard with Kyle Barger and Bryce Atherton which made it impossible for the Mavs to isolate Michaelson in the backcourt. The same was true in the frontcourt as seniors Brandon Swallow and David Richardson were able to convert key baskets and hauled down 10 rebounds between them as they rotated in the post with May. This combination was key as the Invasion wore down the Mavs who were led by Brad Bell who scored 19 points and hauled down 11 rebounds before fouling out late in the game.
As they game wound down in the 4th quarter, the Mavs were forced to foul but the Invasion were up to the task as Michealson converted 8 consecutive free throws, and Tommy Leach added 3 in a row to help Derby extend its lead to the final 10 point margin.
In Women's action, the
Invasion Varsity Women fell to the Metro Mavs JV Women 41-38 in an exciting non-league contest. After trailing 23-15 at half time, the Derby women came alive in the the 2nd half behind senior Debbie King who finished with 16 points and 14 rebounds and freshman Leah Pauli who added 14 points. The JV Lady Mavs however would hold on behind the leadership of Caley Shaffstell who scored 30 points and sealed the victory with 5 key free thows in the final minutes.
