Calvary Baptist -
Pauli leads Lady Invasion to Victory over Defenders
Freshman point guard Leah Pauli scored 22 points, including 9 in the 4th quarter, to lead the
Derby Invasion Women's Varsity to a 55-50 victory over the Wichita Defenders Monday night at Calvary Baptist. With the win, the Lady Invasion salvaged a season split with the Lady Defenders as both teams earned victories on their home court.
The first half went much the same as the first meeting between these two teams as the Lady Defenders scored consistently in the paint and on on the perimeter in route to a 31-22 half time lead. The 3rd quarter saw the Defenders lead grow to 36-26 before the Invasion full court pressure started to create turnovers which fueled a 11-2 run to close the gap to one at 38-37 at the end of the 3rd quarter. The end of this exciting run coincided with the beginning of Pauli's heroics as she was fouled as time expired in the quarter and then calmly made both free throws as players, coaches and fans watched from the sidelines and stands.
In the fourth quarter, Invasion coach Don Folger chose to stay with the pressure defense and his decision was rewarded as the Invasion battled the Defenders basket for basket until finally taking the lead for good at 49-46 with 1:56 to play. Down the stretch, key rebounds and free throws from senior Debbie King put the game out of reach. King, playing with four fouls, still managed to score 18 points and collected a team high 14 rebounds. Sophomore Kay Denton added 10 points and 4 boards for the Invasion. The Lady Defenders were led by Angie Waalkes with 16 points. Sarah Munds chipped in 10 for the Defenders but this was well below the 22 she had scored against Derby back in December as the Invasion played a tight box and one defense with Katie St. John denying Munds the ball much of the evening. The effort by St. John effectively changed the Defenders offensive scheme and proved to be another key to Derby's victory.
In Men's action the
Derby Invasion Varsity Men raced to an early lead and cruised to a 69-46 win over the Defenders Varsity Men Monday night at
The Invasion were again led by Sean Michaelson with 17 points. Barger chipped in 12 and forward David Richardson came off the bench to record a "double-double" with 10 points and 10 boards. Josh May just missed his own "double-double" as he finished with 8 points and a team high 17 rebounds. Backup guards Prestyn Atherton and Tommy Leach also scored 7 apiece as 9
