Invasion vs WAHAA 1

Calvary Baptist -  Michaelson comes alive to lead Invasion to victory over WAHAA

Sean Michaelson scored 22 points to lead the Derby Invasion Varsity men to a 62-51 come from behind victory over the Wichita Warriors Tuesday night in front of a standing room only crowd at Calvary Baptist Church in Derby.  Michaelson scored the game’s first basket but that was quickly answered by the Warriors Adrian Unruh in a fast paced first quarter that saw Wichita drain three “3”s and make 6 of 8 free throws in route to a 19-15 first quarter lead.  The Warriors stepped up the attack in the 2nd quarter with aggressive drives to the basket that resulted in early foul trouble on Derby’s Brandon Swallow and David Richardson.  However, the Invasion were able to battle back to within one point before the Warriors Zach Whitley drained a “3” as time expired in the 2nd quarter to boost Wichita’s lead to four at 35-31.

The 3rd quarter started with Michaelson again making the first basket but this was quickly answered by Wichita’s Taylor Wilbeck.  Ironically, this basket proved to be a turning point as the Invasion defense tightened and Derby cut into the Warrior advantage before Tommy Leach scored on a break away layup to give the Invasion the lead for good with 2:34 left in the quarter.  Leach’s basket was a part of a 11-4 run by Derby that culminated in another buzzer beater, this time by the Invasion’s Bryce Atherton to give Derby a 44-41 3rd quarter lead.  The 4th quarter saw the Invasion extend their lead behind the inside play of Josh May who finished with 15 points, 9 rebounds and 5 blocks and guard play from Kyle Barger who had 5 of his 7 points in the final frame.  These efforts overshadowed another fine performance by Josh Robinson who led the Warriors with 22 points including 9 in the final quarter.  Zach Whitley also put in a great effort with 11 points and 5 boards before fouling out late in the game.

In the end, the teams, coaches and fans exchanged handshakes and greetings.  And while the quality and outcome of the game is always a subject of commentary depending on the color of your uniform that night, it was wonderful to see the Wichita homeschool community turn out in such great numbers to support these kids.  And stay tuned, as there is always another chapter to be written and you won’t have to wait long as the Invasion travel across town to meet the Warriors at their new home at the Church at the Cross on February 19th at 8pm.  Hope to see you there!

In Womens action, the Lady Warriors defeated the Lady Invasion 46-24 Tuesday night at Calvary.  The Warriors started quickly with a 19-0 run in the first quarter and cruised thereafter as Derby never really got untracked and could not cut into the early deficit.  Leah Pauli led the Invasion with 12 points but the Warrior defense held the team's leading scorer, Debbie King, to a season low 3 points on the night.  Both Invasion Men and Women are back in action on Saturday afternoon facing Flint Hills Christian at Calvary Baptist.  Go INVASION!
