Lady Invasion rally in 4th quarter to Defeat Chanute Christian

The Derby Invasion Women erased an early 4th quarter deficit to defeat the Chanute Christian Women 37-31 on December 18th at Chanute.  This game was a rematch of teams that faced each other at the Shea Tournament.  That game was an easy victory for Derby but this night proved to be a struggle as the Warriors delighted the home crowd with spirited play throughout.

The Lady Invasion finally took control late with a smothering full court press that created numerous turnovers and scoring opportunities.  After being held to 4 points in the 3rd quarter, Derby scored 13 in the final frame including key baskets by Hannah Henderson and Karen Vishnefske.  Derby also converted 5 of 7 free throws down the stretch including 2 of 2 by Audri Vrbas.  The Invasion were once again led by Debbie King with 13 points.  Leah Paul chipped in 6 and led the attack on the press that proved to be the difference in this game.

In Men's action, the Invasion overcame a slow start in the 1st quarter to earn a 74-53 victory over the Chanute Men.  After leading only 15-14 after the 1st quarter, the Invasion went on a 13-2 run to open the 2nd quarter, again fueled by Tommy Leach's 9 points.  The Invasion led 40-28 at half and cruised in the second half as "twin towers" Josh May and David Richardson both recorded double double's in points and rebounds.  May lead the Invasion with 17points followed by Richardson's 14.  Leach added 13 and Brandon Swallow 10 as Derby had 4 players score in double figures and all 10 players scored in the game.  With the win the Invasion move to 7-2 on the season heading into the Holiday break.
