Invasion Men come from behind to defeat Word of Life
The
Derby Invasion Men rallied from 14 points down in the 3rd quarter to win a 62-60 thriller against Word of Life on December 16th at Calvary Baptist.
In a game that will become an instant classic for Invasion fans, both teams scored early and often in the 1st quarter that ended with the Fire leading 15-13. Derby came out with full court pressure and zone defense but WOL consistently found the open man and scored in transition. The Invasion stayed close, behind Brandon Swallow's 8 points in the quarter.
The second quarter saw the Fire begin to figure out the Derby zone and they extended their lead to 31-24 at half. In the 3rd quarter, WOL resumed the attack and their lead grew to 14 following a huge dunk by Alex Battle that electrified the crowd and forced Invasion coach Brian Swallow to take a time out to regoup. Ironically, this became a turning point in the game as Derby began to climb back into the game led by back-up guard Tommy Leach. Leach's 9 points helped the Invasion cut the lead to 5 before WOL's Chris Dawson hit a 3 pointer at the buzzer for a 49-41 Fire lead.
The 4th quarter saw the Invasion go back to full court pressure as guards Kyle Barger and Bryce & Prestyn Atherton began to force turnovers that were turned into easy baskets by Derby. The final minutes were a blur as the Invasion sent wave after wave of fresh players into the game to keep the pressure on WOL. After getting within one at 60-59, Derby forced a turnover and then Sean Michaelson was fouled with 24 seconds left. Michaelson calmly hit both free throws to give Derby the lead and then added another with :02 left for the final margin.
Josh May played another solid game and led the Invasion with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Leach followed with 11 points and Michaelson added 8 including 6 consecutive free throws in the 4th quarter. WOL was led by Alex Battle's 19 points and Chris Dawson chipped in 18, making 6 of 8 three pointers for the Fire.
In women's action, the
Lady Invasion raced to an early lead and cruised to a 47-18 win over the Lady Fire. The Lady Invasion were led by senior post player Debbie King who recorded a "double double" with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Leah Pauli added 11 points and Katie St. John chipped in 11 points and 5 rebounds.
