Derby Men Shake Off Rust, Earn Split With Defenders

Updated:  12/09/2008 at 12:51 PM

After 10 days off, the Invasion Men got back into action on November 25th with a 74-53 win over the Wichita Defenders.  Derby started slowly as the teams traded baskets, and turnovers, in the first quarter.  The Invasion took the lead in the 2nd quarter and were showing signs of life until the Defenders Tate Jackson, who led all scorers with 21, sank a 3 point basket at the buzzer to tie the game at 31 at halftime.  Derby finally shook off the rust in the third quarter with an aggressive zone defense and dominating the boards with twin towers Josh May and David Richardson.  This led to numerous fast breaks, and a 23-7 run as the up-tempo offense was led by Sean Michaelson’s 17 points.  Brandon Swallow chipped in 15 and Kyle Barger added 13 as all 9 Derby players scored in the game.   The win improved the Invasion Men’s record to 3-2 as they prepare to travel to KC this weekend to play KC East and Olathe Christian.

In the Varsity Women’s game, the Defenders handed the Lady Invasion their first loss of the season 56-46.  After the Defenders had built a 35-22 halftime lead, the determined Derby women chipped away at the lead and got as close as 6 points down in the third quarter but were unable to completely close the gap.  The Lady Invasion were led by senior forward Debbie King with 14 points followed by freshman point guard Leah Pauli with 11.  Audri Vrbas added 8 and Kay Denton 7 for Derby .  The Lady Invasion are back in action December 2nd and will then travel to Manhattan on December 4th along with our JV Men to participate in the Shea Tournament hosted by FlintHills Christian Academy.

Hope to see you this weekend in Kansas City and/or Manhattan .  Go Invasion!
