The Derby Invasion opened the 2008-2009 basketball season in a big way November 13-15 by participating in three preseason tournaments both locally and out of state. Then we opened the
regular season schedule November 18th in our sparkling
new home gym at
Calvary Baptist Church in Derby. Some highlights of our teams are listed below.
Men's Varsity
The Invasion enjoyed the sights and sounds of
Springfield, Missouri at the NCHBC Tip Off Classic, finishing 4th in this 14 team event. The tournament featured some of the best homeschool teams in the country and was a great opportunity for our men to test their preseason #8 ranking by NCHBC. The fans that traveled to Springfield were not disappointed as the Invasion won their opener against the Springfield Knights 63-39. The Invasion were led by pre-season All American Sean Michaelson with 20 points. Kyle Barger added 14 and Brandon Swallow 12 as Derby raced to an early lead and never looked back. The victory earned Derby a #3 seed in bracket play and the men responded with a thrilling 48-46 win over the
Memphis Nighthawks. Memphis led most of the game but could not pull away from the determined Invasion who tied the game late in the 4th Quarter. Memphis still had the advantage, and the ball, after an errant pass by
Tommy Leach with 10 seconds to play. But Leach and the Invasion would get a 2nd chance when Josh May made a brilliant defensive play to get the ball back for Derby with 2.6 seconds remaining. After a timeout, Kyle Barger inbounded to Leach who nailed a 15 foot jumper as time expired for the Derby victory. May led the Invasion with 11 points and 9 rebounds, and newcomer David Richardson chipped in 8 points and a dozen boards for Derby. The victory over Memphis earned the Men a final four matchup vs the powerhouse OKC Storm. Derby played well early but could not overcome the balanced Storm attack and fell 56-41. The loss put Derby in the
consolation game vs Riverview Christian School of
Forsyth, Missouri who featured the 6'
7" twin towers Teddy and Nathan Simniok. The Invasion, were able to counter the Simniok twins with great intensity and Sean Michaelson's 27 points. The game was tied with under a minute to play but Derby fell just short as Riverview made some key free throws down the stretch to hold on 56-54. Josh May added 6 points and 9 rebounds and Kyle Barger chipped in 8 points for Derby.
Women's JV and Varsity The Invasion Women opened their season at the Warriors tournament with our JV team going 1-2 over the weekend. In the opening round, Derby battled the Northfield varsity women even for 4 quarters in a back and forth game that saw the lead change multiple times. With time running out, Northfield got one last chance and hit a shot that won the game 39-38. The Invasion JV women rebounded from the first round defeat with a 54-14 victory over the Wichita Defenders JV. Derby raced to an early lead and never looked back featuring balanced scoring and inspired defense throughout. Our final tournament game featured the Derby JV against the Varsity Women from
South Central. Our women came from behind in the 4th quarter to tie the game but South Central pulled away at the end for a 41-36 victory. Leah Pauli who averaged 21 points was named to the All Tournament team. The Invasion Varsity Women opened their season a few days later against the same squad from South Central and scored an impressive victory behind the leadership of 3 year starter Debbie King.
Men's JV The Invasion JV also played in the Warriors tournament and won their last 2 games to finish 5th. In the first round, Derby fell to the Varsity Men from Ark City Christian 52-40. Derby was led by Nathan Folger with 12 points and Jesse May and Nick Michaelson both scored nine for the Invasion. Round 2 saw Derby "rebound" to defeat the Defenders JV 66-34. Derby was led by Hunter Davis with 19 points and Paul Vishnefske added 14 for the victors. Then in the consolation final, Derby held off the South Central Varsity to win 54-53 behind 19 from Davis and 14 from Michaelson.
JR High Boys and Girls The Invasion JR High participated in the Bethel Life Kings classic with both squads finishing 2-1. The Derby Boys finished 2nd and starting with a 47-18 victory over Wichita Adventist. That was followed by 37-28 semi final win over the Wichita Warriors. In the final, Derby fell to the host and champion Bethel Life 42-26. Leading scorers for the Invasion boys were Cale Hager, Caleb Davis and Stefan Smith. The Derby Girls also played well but finished 5th as they lost their opening round game 34-12 to eventual champion Bethel Life. The girls came back to defeat St. Joe's 26-18 and then defeated the Defenders 29-17 in the consolation finals. Congratulations to our teams and for all the fans that were able to come our and show their support!
