The Derby men jumped out to an early 16-6 lead and then had to rally in the 4th quarter to secure a hard fought 44-40 victory last night over the Illinois Crusaders in the opening round of the National Homeschool Basketball Tournament in Oklahoma City. With the victory, the Invasion move on to round 2 tonight at 7pm against the Cincinnati Landmark Eagles.
The Invasion continued their clutch postseason play, relying on a total team effort to secure the victory. Sean Michaelson scored 21 to lead Derby in scoring. Josh May added 7 points, 9 boards and several blocks. Kyle Barger scored 2 early buckets then settled in to play tough defense on the Crusader's top scorer. Caleb Vrbas came in cold off the bench to convert 2 free throws for Brandon Swallow when Swallow was injured early in the third quarter. Thomas Leach only took 2 shots in the game but made both including the deuce that ignited the Invasion's 4th quarter rally. And Bryce Atherton saved the best for last as he nailed two free throws with 4 second to play to seal the win for Derby.
