The Derby men overcame early foul trouble and put together one of their best performances of the year to defeat the Springfield Knights 57-48 to take 5th place in the 12 team 6A bracket at the Gateway Regional Homeschool Tournament in Lebanon. Missouri.
The Invasion victory required a total team effort as both Josh May and Brandon Swallow were whistled for 2 fouls each in the first quarter. This forced Derby to employ a variety of line ups and defensive schemes to slow down the Knights. Time and time again the Derby men made key defensive stops and used the clutch shooting of Sean Michaelson and Caleb Vrbas to gain a four point advantage at the half.
The 3rd quarter belonged to the Knights Josh Carter who scored 11 of his team high 18 points helping Springfield tie the score at 36 by the end of the quarter. However, the fourth quarter belonged to the Invasion
who exploded for 21 points in the final frame including converting 9 of 12 free throws down the stretch.
The Derby men were led by Sean Michaelson with 18 points. Brandon Swallow added 10 and Caleb Vrbas 8 as eight players scored for the 20-8 Invasion . The win should earn the young Invasion men a slot in Division 1 of the National Homeschool Basketball Championships to be held March 10-15 in Oklahoma City.
