The Derby men wrote a new chapter in a season full of firsts by defeating the Oklahoma City Storm-North 40-38 in overtime in the consolation bracket of the Gateway Regional Tournament in Lebanon, Missouri. With the win, the Invasion men move on to play the Springfield Knights for 5th place in the 12 team 6A bracket.
Derby rallied from a 14-2 deficit in the first quarter before finally tying the score at 35 all at the end of three quarters. The fourth quarter saw the Storm regain the lead as they converted 3 free throws and held the lead until Sean Michaelson connected on a game tying 3 pointer with 4 seconds remaining. The Invasion defense then held the Storm to force overtime.
The overtime period was a defensive struggle with neither team able to gain an advantage. Then with 10 seconds remaining, Derby made another defensive stop and Brandon Swallow rebounded and made a perfect outlet pass to Bryce Atherton who raced down court and converted an 8 foot jumper with 6 seconds remaining. The Storm took a timeout and set up a final play but that attempt was blocked by Josh May as time expired.
The Derby men were led by Sean Michaelson with 16 points. Brandon Swallow added 7 and Bryce Atherton chipped in 5 points for the 19-8 Invasion . In the end as the Derby faithful stormed the court, credit this victory to some timely baskets, incredible team defense and mostly, the will to battle until the final horn sounds.
