Thomas Leach scored 4 of the last 5 points including 2 free throws with less than a minute to play to help the Derby men hold on for a 59-57 victory over the Flint Hills Christian Warriors on Saturday in Manhattan.
Derby had raced to an early lead in the first quarter but could not put away the homestanding Warriors who pulled even at 52 apiece late in the fourth quarter. Later, with the score tied at 56, Brandon Swallow was fouled and made 1 of 2 free throws to put Derby ahead by one. After a Flint Hills turnover, the Warriors were forced to foul Leach who made both free throws to push the lead to 59-56.
Then with .8 seconds to play Kyle Barger fouled fouled Sid Catterson who was shooting a "3". Catterson missed the first, then made the second to cut the score to 59-57. He missed the third shot but a Warriors player got the loose ball and made a 2 point shot that would have tied the score and sent the game into overtime. However, the referees ruled that the shot was taken after the horn sounded and thus nullified the basket.
Sean Michaelson led the Invasion with 22 points. Brandon Swallow added 14 and Josh May scored 8 for Derby. The Flint Hills guard tandem of Featherstone and Catterson combined for 39 to pace the Warriors.
