Colonial Heights -
Hutch CCA behind Trenton Stutzman's game high 36 points, scored a narrow 68-63 victory over the Derby Invasion Thursday night at Colonial Heights. Hutch held on despite career scoring nights from both Brandon Swallow with 22 points and Josh May who combined 13 points with numerous key rebounds for the Invasion. Sean Michaleson also had 16 points and 7 rebounds for Derby.
In a game that saw numerous lead changes, CCA lead at half time as well as at the end of the 3rd quarter but could never put away the scrappy young men from Derby. With Hutch leading 48-46, Bryce Atherton made 4 consecutive free throws to put the Invasion ahead 50-48. At that point, Stutzman took over for the Cougars, scoring 16 points down the stretch including a basket that broke a tie at 60 and gave Hutch a lead that they would not relinquish.
Despite the loss, the Invasion men posted a season best 63% shooting from the field and also made 9 of 14 free throws. Derby will enjoy some time off over the holidays before heading to KC in early January to face KC Northland and the Metro Mavs.
In a time shortened JV game, the Invasion won 31-30 behind 9 points and 5 rebounds from Hunter Davis. Blake Hager added 7 points and Caleb Verbas had 6 points and a team high 9 rebounds for Derby.
